Altruism: Teenline

I volunteered with Teenline for my Altruism. This was perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. Teenline is a national helpline for teenagers. It is the only organisation in Ireland which provides a freephone confidential service specifically for teenagers, aged 13-19. Teenline Ireland was founded by an Irish mother in 2006 following the death of her son who took his own life at the age of 16. My project required that I work a total of 30 hours and I volunteered to work on the phonelines on Tuesday nights from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Training took place on two Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During my time with Teenline I have met some truly inspirational people. I have also had the opportunity to listen to teenagers, some of who are living through very difficult situations, and yet are brave enough to reach out by calling Teenline. Teenline has really taught me about the power of listening and I have greatly benefitted personally from my time volunteering with this organisation.
